The Enterochromaffin Cellular System
MetadataShow full item record
The following work represents a detailed review of the accumulated knowledge concerning the silver-positive enterochromaffln oells of the gastrointest1nal tract. The histology, histochemistry, morphology and embryology of the cells are self-defining and are left so here. However, the section dealing with 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), as it is concerned with the function of these cells, is not conclusive. The reason is the lack of a definitive experimental conclusion, as 5-HT has a general importance within the body and its effects are not confined to the gastro1ntestinal tract. Thus the disouss1on 1s kept as relevant as possible, although there is much data not touched which connection to the enterochromaffin cells could be argued, yet no data in relation to the cells is available.
