Diderot, Leader of the Philosophic Group of Eighteenth Century France: A Translation of Selected Letters from the Years 1764 and 1765
Abstract
Shar1ng the belief that D1derot is too much neglected
in America and particularly by historians, I hoped to share
some part of Mr. Roth's masterpiece with those who read only
English. I further hoped to draw from certain letters
selected for translat1on, some conclusions valuable from a
historical point of v1ew. I soon found out that to do a good
job of interpreting certain letters 1n this ed1t1on would
requ1re research and scholarship far beyond the scope of a senior independent project at Kalamazoo College. I will be
satisfied w1th my work, however, 1f I only help 1n some small
way to bring attention f1rst to Denis Diderot and secondly to
the vast storehouse of 1nformation in Georges Roth's edition
of D1derot's correspondence.
