Abstract
The original goal of this project was to evaluate the accuracy and usefulness or a new carbon dioxide analyzer and gain an understanding of the importance or measuring carbon dioxide concentrations and tensions in physiology and medicine. The role of carbon dioxide in health and disease is a difficult but very important subject and one that is under constant consideration in the anesthesia department of the Massachusetts General Hospital where this project was undertaken. Evaluating the new analyzer was to be a minor part of the project. When the analyzer never materialized, the time and effort that was to be spent on it was applied to the study of the physiology of carbon dioxide. A great deal was learned about the role of carbon dioxide, about physiology in general, and about the way research is conducted by doing this project. The result has been a senior project which has been .for me an invaluable experience in research.
