Abstract
What I will be concerned with, for the most part, is the recurring tendency to revert to irrationality and the results of this tendency in the development of Mannerism. I will concentrate on the earliest Mannerists for they mark the true beginnings of the anti-classical trend and reveal a stronger, almost adolescent , rebellion against the stability of the Renaissance. These artists, Pontormo, Rosso, and Beccafumi, unlike some of the later Mannerists, are still somewhat free from the limited, overly intellectual "elegance" of "court art" and are not yet drawn into the proto-Baroque and Realistic trends apparent during the sixteenth century.
