This paper is the result of an eight week study of social change as a result of the influence of the developing highway system in Mexico. It was undertaken Due to my interest in that country and in the forces that are helping and hindering its development. The first part of the study consisted in reading magazine and newspaper articles, books, and pamphlets, and consulting government statistical records concerning the social, economic and political organization and history of Mexico and 80cial change in general. The second part consisted of a four week study of one small Mexican town. During the four weeks, I lived in the town with a family recommended by the local priest. This particular town was picked because, within the last ten years, a highway was constructed which passed by it. It was also recommended to me by professors in Mexico City, and in the short time that I had, it was the only town in which I was able to find contacts.
