In this paper I am trying to demonstrate that A Fable is not so complex a work as previous critics have maintained, and that one can profitably examine the novel using expectation as a motif. I have emphasized certain aspects of the novel to the expense of others which I felt had been covered by other critics and I have only touched on other aspects to emphasize that I have not come close to exhausting A Fable's possibilities.
