Mathematical Learning Theory: The Theories of W.K. Estes and of R.R. Bush and F. Mosteller

The origins of the use of mathematics in psychology are reviewed briefly as an introduction to the development of a mathematical learning theory. The role of the model, especia1ly the mathematical model, in theory construction is discussed. The mathematical theories presented are Bates' statistical model and Bush and Mosteller's stochastic model tor learning. These models are 1nterpreted 1n terms of several learning phenomena: acquisition and extinction, spontaneous recovery and regression, and generalization and discrimination.
