An Exploration of Community Attitudes toward Negroes in a Chicago Suburb
Abstract
The scope of the study 1s extremely broad which prohibits
in-depth analysis of any one area. At the same time, this makes
it possible to view many aspects of Des Plaines as a non-integrated
city and to see it in the perspective which is necessarily in keeping
with the concept that the entire problem of real integration is
complex and not reducible to one area for explanation.
The study consists of a short history of the city, and a
description of the city as it now exists. This is included to
help to explain why the city has not previously been integrated, and
to explore what possible past occurrences there have been which
have created the city and its contemporary outlook toward integration.
