Abstract
This study deals with compounds of metal-metal quadruple bonds. The quadruple bond consists of four components--a σ component, two π components, and a δ component. When the metal-metal bond is taken as the z-axis, these bonding orbitals are derived from the overlap of the dz2, the dxz and dyz ,and the dxy orbitals, respectively to give an electron configuration of σ2π4δ2. The remaining dx2-y2 orbital and the s, px , and py orbitals are used in metal-ligand bonding, while the pz orbital can either mix with the dz2 orbital or stick out by itself.
