The Diels-Alder reaction is a very general reaction and an extremely useful tool of the organic chemist. It has been a topic of intense interest and study since its confirmation in 1928, due to its intriguing mechanism of cycloaddition and particularly due to its utility in preparing compounds not available by any other means. It is often the crucial step in the synthesis of a wide variety of bicyclic compounds including many complicated natural products.
