Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the nature of British imperialism in southern Nigeria in order to arrive at a more precise conception of British imperialism in Africa than that provided by the studies of V. I. Lenin, J. A. Hobson, and J. A. Schumpeter. The nature of the subject and my reaction to it dictate that this paper combine the elements of both a thesis and an essay. Some aspects of this study have been adequately dealt with by African historians and require an analysis of their ideas. However, other aspects of British imperialism had not, I felt, been adequately developed and required deeper research.
