The purpose of this thesis is to search through Wilbur's
poetry after what Henry James calls "the complex figure in
a Persian carpet." Though not all of Wilbur's poems will
fit the pattern, the point of the thesis is to discover what
basic consistent convictions emerge from Wilbur's work.
