It is necessary to provide a background to the interrelations of the United States of America and the Peoples' Democratic Republic of Hungary in order that one may better understand their respective foreign policies. For it is primarily these two sets of foreign policies which give meaning to the relationship of the United States and Hungary during this time of great and grave historical occurrences -- the Hungarian Revolution, October 23 to November 4, 1956, and the Hungarian Revolt, November 4, 1956, through even now.
