Abstract
Mitosis is a highly complex, dynamic system about which relatively little is known. Swann' s review best summarizes the voluminous experimental data and trends of thought that have been established and that are being further studied today. The most complete morphologioal account available on mitosis is given by Mazia. An integrated biochemical description of the mitotio process, although not yet available, is very desirable. Physarum polycephalum is an ideal experimental Subject for mitotio studies; it is a large multi-nucleate plasmodium in which the nuclei divide synchronously. Cell division does not complicate a study of the intranuclear and cytoplasmio mitotio events. Mitotio events are amplified as the nuolei proceed together through the mitotic stages. In previous work, now in press, an unknown substanoe(s) was found in Physarum polycephalum which appeared shortly before mitosis and disappeared before prophase. This thesis reports on the isolation, purification, and characterization of this oompound(s).
