The Civil War is an interesting as well as critical period in American History. The topic of prisoner exchanges fits well into the above generalization. It is my intention to examine this area in the following work. This is an account of the exchanges during the course of the War. I have attempted to be objective in the preparation of the paper. In so doing, the Union has received some harsh criticism at times. This, I believe, is justified by the facts. These were obtained for the most part from Series II of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. As, in all human endeavors, there are likely to be shortcomings. However, they all belong to the author.
