A Behavioral Comparison between Children with a Sibling with Spina Bifida and Children with No Handicapped Sibling

Available literature suggests that children are adversely affected by the presence of a handicapped sibling. This study was conducted to determine the difference between the dependency, interdependency, aggression, and achievement motivation tendencies of children with a sibling with Spina Bifida and children with no handicapped sibling. Teacher's of Ss rated the above-mentioned tendencies of 13 children 1-3 years older than a Spina Bifida sibling (Group S) and 13 controlS, a same-sexed classmate of each S (Group CM) Three ratings were possible: (a): more often than . . . (b) about the same as . . . and (c) less often than . . . the same-sexed members of the class. There was no significant difference for independency and achievement motivation. It was concluded that children with a handicapped sibling are rated as deviant in their behavior from the average tor their age and sex, and this deviation is most pronounced in the areas of dependency and aggression. Further investigation of the dependency and aggression tendencies of children with handicapped sibs is indicated.With honors.
