The Role of Symbolism in the Thought of Alfred North Whitehead
Abstract
In order to explicate the nature and function of symbolism
so as to make possible more effective and intelligent
use of it, I have undertaken a systematic presentation of the
doctrine of symbolism of Alfred North Whitehead. As his
treatment of symbolism is an integral part of his system of
thought, I have found it necessary to first present a general
description of that system, providing an orientation for the
important role of symbolism in human existence. Whitehead's
'process philosophy' is so called because he rejects the ultimacy of substance in favor of a concept of the universe
as essentially a process of becoming, of the world as a place of activity and change. It will be shown also that
his appreciation for the fundamental emotional quality of
existence and his presentation of mental act1vity as pr1mar1ly synthetic and abstract give invaluable insight into the
workings of symbolism. With honors.
