The purposes of this thesis are several. I wish to present the results of my research into the nature of a particular epidermal protein and to foster an appreciation in the reader's mind of some of the problems encountered in an endeavor of this sort. Moreover, I wish to focus attention on dermatological research for the investigation of biochemical phenomena. Customarily, dermatological knowledge has been applied to the clinical treatment of a variety of widely distributed but little-understood maladies of the skin. Only recently has the skin been used in the elucidation of various cellular processes, and its truly dynamic and useful nature been recognized. Hopefully, this thesis will illustrate the applicability of the skin to biochemical research.
