My translation of "The Great Gatsby" is not a literal but a "literary" one and was done with the German reader in mind. I have tried to keep as much of Fitzgerald's poetic style as possible but have purposely avoided word-for-word translations and worked with the sentence as a unit instead; I have also made an effort to be consistent in translating the level of language spoken by the various characters and treat the novel as a whole. Of course, this translation -- like all translations -- reflects my personal conception of the sto1y and the characters involved and therefore is a somewhat subjective "interpretation."
