Abstract
A dynamic change was needed in Kalamazoo, and this change came about in 1958 with the construction of two blocks of a pedestrian mall in the heart of downtown Kalamazoo. Since the completion of the Mall, only one study of the Mall and the problems it was meant to solve has been done. E. John Graichen wrote his Senior Thesis at Kalamazoo College on, "Downtown Kalamazoo The impact of Its Mall." This thesis, which was completed in January of 1963, was concerned mainly with the economic effect of the Mall. It is the intention of this study to look at some of the economic effects and bring Mr. Graichen's figures up to date, however, it is primarily concerned with determining what steps, if any, should be taken beyond the construction of the Mall.
