Abstract
The recent "insurance crisis" associated with the unavailability and unaffordability of medical malpractice insurance for health care providers derives from a hydra-shaped myriad of alleged causes. Adversely, there is an equally voluminous set of proposed solutions to supposedly cure an illness that the American Medical Association claims is threatening to destroy the practice of medicine. In addition, the AHA claims that the lawsuit crisis is forcing many physicians to cut back on their patient load for fear of being sued, and also is leading physicians to practice "defensive medicine", or additional, "unnecessary" treatment procedures again for fear of being sued.
