Abstract
In order to become more in tune to Lithuanian political
behavior, this paper will explore the Lithuanian past from the Middle
Ages to the loss of its independence to the Soviets in 1940. It will
explore Lithuanian political behavior from the perspective of the
fascist ideology. Those not very well acquainted with Lithuanian
history may wonder why. From a Lithuanian's perspective, the
question of fascism has haunted him since World War Two. In fact, to
talk of such a subject is considered a taboo in the Lithuanian society.
Having to find material on the subject of this paper I visited Chicago
which holds the largest Lithuanian community outside of Lithuania.
There, many people inquired my reasons for suddenly appearing in
Chicago. Believe me, telling them the subject of my research was not
easy. I wanted to generalize the title subject in order to not cause
any negative reaction, but for the sake of honesty and the knowledge
of certain reactions, I told the truth. I replied, "Fascism in the
Lithuanian-American community (my initial endeavor." One person
reacted by exclaiming, "Jesus Christ, did you have to choose that
subject!" This reaction sums up the reaction of other Lithuanians I so
kindly obliged to telling the truth. This paper hopefully will
objectively show that Lithuanians politically have many fascist
tendencies, but are not fascist. The authors used in the research
agree with this tenet. Finally, this paper will hopefully open
Lithuanian eyes to their political past and show them they do not
have to apologize for any part of it.
