Although the author maintains definite ideas of where responsibility for the Civil War is most highly concentrated, the issue remains incredibly complex. Rather than argue dogmatically for one cause or another, the purpose of this thesis has been to give the reader an extensive background of the times from the only source which has remained vital to this day -- public reaction. It is hoped that the reader will be sufficiently enlightened to draw his own conclusions.
