Abstract
I first became interested in Chamberlain's alliance
efforts when I began to consider the question: "If there
had been an Anglo-German alliance, would the First World
War have occurred?" My research began with the thesis
that the obstruction of individuals--Salisbury, the
Kaiser, etc.--was the main reason for the failure of
Chamberlain's efforts. But I soon discovered that many of
the assumptions of the Colonial Secretary were false, for
there were fundamental historical and geographic obstacles
to Anglo-German alliance.
