Abstract
Do we allow art to be defined by those who have more interest and intelligence in art but who would have a more limited view of what art is, or do we leave it up to the populists who have a broader range of art but perhaps are not as knowledgeable in the area and would sacrifice excellence for quantity? I think the only possible solution is a combination of the two. The National Endowment for the Arts is an institution that needs to be saved in order to protect both the 'traditional' art forms which are such an important part of culture and the future artist which have a chance to add to the culture of the United States. We cannot allow a small percentage of 'controversial' art to jeopardize an important part of our country.
