The New School of Kalamazoo Painting
Abstract
In the summer of 2009, I begin planning my SIP. I had several conversations with Kalamazoo College about painting a mural and was even approve to do one. However, I opportunity that would all me to get work experience as well as pay for my SIP came along. Allied Capital Corp are professional developers of commercial real estate in the Kalamazoo, MI and Fort Myers, FL, they gave me a $1000.00 commission to paint the stairway in their Kalamazoo office. Harry Albright, President and Owner, was looking for a colorful, abstract that would in not only honor their business but also enhance the experience of the building. The mural project from the beginning was going to be a big job. The “canvas” was cinderblock and brick walls. Four walls which were 11’ x 29’, two walls that were 18’ x 7’. That is 1,528 square feet!! I knew that it would be important build a team that was talented, reliable, and free. Knowing that I can always depend on Kalamazoo students because I see them all the time and they are hard workers that where I searched. I found three art student, two 2nd years and a senior that were stand out members of the team. I received unexpected help from my friends and even my mom. That is why I have named my SIP the New School of Kalamazoo Painting. Like old master painters of the 14th and 18th century I have named the type of work we do based on the location of where we work.
