Abstract
Homeless families are the fastest growing population among homeless in America. In spite of this fact, many homeless shelters still implement policies which are only suited to meet the needs to single homeless adults. Homelessness affects families in unique ways, and this study was designed to uncover the specific effects which homelessness has on families, in hopes of proving necessary information for implementation of shelters policies better suited to supporting families. The study consisted of survey data as well as interviews, addressing homeless family relationships and family roles, and the perceived impact of homelessness on those factors. Results showed that some families felt that they had grown closer together due to their experience as a homeless family, however some families, in particular two-parent families who resided in shelters which separated fathers from their partner and children, felt that their family had become overall more distant.
