The Creation and Implementation of a Life Skills Therapy Plan for Kalamazoo Juveniles
This study designed and implemented a life skills therapy curriculum used in a mentoring program at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home. The curriculum was designed as a preventative measure for recidivism by addressing the risk factors of recidivism and incorporating existing counseling techniques. Seventeen males and female juveniles gave feedback on the effectiveness of the program. The 6-week program consisted of 19 lesson plans on the topics of problem solving, goal setting, identity development, health awareness, and communication skills. The study was constructed using a pre-test, post test within- group design and one scale was administered. The scale utilized was a life skills assessment survey created by the researcher. There was no significant increase in the post-test result of the life skills assessment survey. Future implications on the use of counseling curriculum in adolescent populations are discussed.
