With the recent commitment to sustainability goals by the City of Kalamazoo, it is important to create a benchmark for the state of the ‘triple bottom line’ of social, economic, and environmental systems, in order to understand where the City is, and where it can go. Though the data presented herein is not original or groundbreaking, its collection and interpretation is unique. After going through a series of steps to identify indicators and collect data, we analyzed the data based on the available literature concerning sustainable systems. We found that though the City is ambitious in its plans and has a strong social safety net, the current systems in place are, as a whole, not performing at a high level, and could use improvements. We also found a number of connections and linkages between the indicators and systems, suggesting that improvements in any one indicator could result in improvements for the whole.
