Abstract
The paper has been divided into five sections in order for me to better concentrate my research activities. Chapter One is more or less a history of the Banque de France . Chapter Two decribes the development of commercial banking in France following the founding of the Banque de France and more importantly it describes the structure of the French banking system today. Chapter Three contains a discussion of the agencies of control. Chapter Four contains a discussion of the techniques of control. The paper ends with a brief discussion of the future of banking in France with special reference to effects of the Common Market. In addition, the appendix to Chapter Two contains a description of several non-bank intermediaries.
