Abstract
The intent of this project is to apply a widely used rating system
to a professional team sport situation and then compare its performance
with either less sophisticated methods. The system to be used is the one
developed by Dr. Arpad Elo for rating chess players. It has been in use
since the early sixties by the United states Chess Federation and also
by F.I.D.E., the world chess organisation. This and other chess rating
systems are discussed in the Theory of Rating Systems by Dr. E1o, a copy of which appears in full in the appendix.
