The revenue model of the hospital is a collection of computer programs which is designed to enable a prediction to be made concernng inpatient revenues on the bases of a patient mix for the period being considered and past usage patterns of hospital facilities. The patient mix may be a projection of the number of patients in some future period, or it may be restricted to a smaller number, even one, of nursing units to determine their contribution to overall revenue in the hospital. The data base for these predictions is a record of patient expenses, using which it is possible to determine, for each nursing unit, how much, on the average, a patient is charged, classified according to which departments make the charges. Overall, this approach to a revenue model appeared to have the best balance between simplicity and accuracy.
