This paper isolates a particular point in time. Although I have dealt with the origins of a proposal and evaluated some of the possible consequences of its defeat, the opportunity to support or to reject this proposal was caught in time on that Sunday afternoon of June 16, 1940. The French had to choose; there could be no turning back or hesitating. Historians have praised them and condemned them on the basis of that day's decision to seek an armistice with the Germans. But the action was taken, under the leadership of Marechal Petain, and the proposal went the way of a wad of paper in the drafting of History.en_US
