This paper will attempt a detailed study of the 25th January 1971 military coup in Uganda. The causes of the coup were many: some unique to Uganda; others based on problems facing all economically underdeveloped countries today. It is not possible to analyze a coup d'etat as an isolated event: the situation on 24th January which gave rise to a coup can only be understood in terms of the character of Uganda's political development. Thus I have included in this paper a brief discussion of political issues during pre- and immediate post-independence years, and a more detailed study of Ugandan politics from the 1966-71 period. If you are not a current K College student, faculty, or staff member, email firstname.lastname@example.org to request access to this SIP.
