The intent of this kinetic study is to help determine if asymmetric carbonium ion intermediates are representative of general Sn1-type alcohol racemization via the experimental determination of the 180 exchange rates during the epimerization of a simple-structured optically active alcohol, phenylmethylcarbinol. We will hopefully reveal conclusive information concerning the existence of asymmetric carbonium ion intermediates durihg general Sn1-type epimerization of optically active alcohols in aqueous solution.
