Abstract
Casehardening is a chemical heat treating process used to harden the surface of metal parts for longer wear. There are three broad areas of casehardening; carburizing, carbonitriding, and nitriding. Each of these processes deals with the diffusion of carbon, nitrogen, or both into the surface of the metal piece at a high temperature. The purpose of this paper is to deal with the physical chemistry aspects of the properties obtained during these processes. In casehardening, the metal parts are subjected to diffusion at high temperatures and during diffusion and after quenching, they will undergo phase changes which give them the desired hardness properties.
