Abstract
The polyurethane industry relies primarily on aromatic diisocyanates such as toluene diisocyanate (TDI). Unfortunately the applicability of polyurethanes derived from aromatic diisocyanates is limited because of a pronounced tendency for the polymers to yellow with exposure to sunlight. It appears that the yellowing problem may be circumvented by the use of aliphatic diisocyanates. The present study was undertaken to ascertain the rate constants for the condensation of a series of aliphatic diisocyanates with 1-butanol.
