The Comparison of Temperature Gradients of a Liquid PCM Found by Laser to Those Predicted by a Mathematical Model

The temperature gradiant of the liquid PCM n-Octadecane was measured using laser refraction. The technique is described and the data is compared to a mathematical model for a conduction phase-change process. It was found that convection due to bubbles rising from the solid and conduotion by the cell body led to experimental data different than that predicted, since these forms of heat transfer were not accounted in the model. More work in development of a better experimental cell is required to allow for the PCM to be the sole medium of heat transfer.
