Abstract
This paper has attempted examinations of the role
of the press in the American democracy and its existence under
the terms of the First Amendment, the contentions of the
members of the press and the Government regarding the press
subpoena and the proposed legislation and Justice Department
subpoena-issuance guidelines, all of which have arisen out
of the press subpoena controversy.
