On August 3, 1981, the Professional Air Traffic Controllers' Organization (PATCO) went on strike against the federal government. This strike was in protest of unfair working conditions and in protest of an expired contract. Although the actual strike occurred in the summer of 1981, the planning for the job action began many months, even years, before the actual strike.en_US
