The leaves and fruits of plants containing naturally occurring linear furocoumarins, such as psoralene, have been used for centuries in Egypt, India, and other eastern countries in the treatment of skin depigmentation. In the modern world, synthetic furocoumarins, such as 4,5’,8-trimethylpsoralene, have been found to possess greater photosensitizing activity than many natural psoralenes.
