Abstract
Interactions between the United States and the countries of Central America and the Caribbean have intrigued me for several years. The time I have spent working and studying in Guatemala, the Dominican Republic and Mexico has provided me with a broader understanding of the dynamics of Latin American politics and interstate relations. My Latin American friends-especially Guatemalans and Dominicans-have challenged me to examine the nature of the relationships between the United States of America and the various nation-states of Central and South America. I hope that this study might make a most modest contribution to the scholarship on such topics.
