Abstract
Spouse assault is a new and controversial topic.
Experts disagree on the actual causes of spouse assault
and on the appropriate solutions. They disagree on the
extent of the problem and on what actually constitutes
a beating or battering. Because so many different opinions
exist, and because one's opinion about spouse assault
is linked to one's perception of the "proper" relationship
between men and women, I must explain my vie~point
here. My opinions come from a feminist perspective. This
means that I believe women have been victimized in many
ways by our society's mores and laws, by men, and by their
upbringing and socialization. To me this is especially
clear in spouse assault. I believe spouse assault is
directly linked to the assigned sex-roles in our culture.
I have tried, ho~ever, to be as impartial as possible in
my discussion of the victims, the assailants, and the
solutions. I do not think I have presented an unbalanced
picture-- I have tried to understand spouse assault as
a problem of our entire society, and not as a battle of
women against men.
