This study aims to focus on the widespread landlessness of the peasant in Brazil. To concentrate merely on the subtle ways in which peasants seek to fight off or adapt to changes in their circumstance would be to deny the drastic effect that growth in landlessness creates. Extending Tawney's metaphor, what happened in Brazil was not the result of ripples, but of a tidal wave, with historical antecedents of equal proportions.
