Abstract
The ultimate project goal has been the development of a reliable reactivity index for the Claisen rearrangement of allyloxy-aromatic systems. At this stage, correct predictions of
the rearrangement products of a limited number of systems have been obtained by comparing the Huckel ћ-electron energy differences between the assumed intermediates leading to rearranged products. The bulk of the present paper is concerned with the mechanism of the ortho-Claisen rearrangement. As such, this paper lays the foundation for subsequent work on reactivity criteria for the Claisen rearrangement.
