dc.description.abstractIn order to successfully continue research on non-stoichiometric mixed-valent W(VI,V)-oxide coatings on glassy carbon electrodes, there are several aspects of the project that must be reviewed or changed. Although film formation was reproducible, more defined films could possibly be obtained with longer coating times. Colloid formation could also be varied with temperature. The failed spectrophotometric experiments could be revised and tried again but that may be more trouble than it is worth as there are other experiments that show more useful promise. In order to make the gravimetric experiments more reproducible, a cell in which coated electrodes would not be disturbed would have to be constructed. There would also be a need to find a better way to remove the sulfuric acid from the electrode surface. Areas of the stability analysis showed promise. Further experiments should be done on both acid concentration and soaking at reducing potentials. Finding the sulfuric acid concentration with minimal tungsten oxide solubility would be quite useful for later studies. Extent of stability and film characteristic changes for soaking at reducing potentials needs to be further investigated. Copper complex experiments need to be greatly modified. Using another medium, perhaps alcoholic rather than acidic, could be used to better complex the copper and ligand. A better medium may even be a mixture of acid and alcohol. Voltammetry work needs to be done on the complex so that a results compare better with those of Rorabacher's group. More defined voltammagrams of the complex will be useful when trying to incorporate the complex into a film. There are also other ligand systems that have potential to be used in cationic complexes. Of all areas in this study that need further research, the copper complex incorporations need to be studied most.en_US
