Fluoride Ion Sensor Based on Aluminum (III)-Octaethylporphryin in Thin Polymeric Film Cast on a Microtiter Plate

A method for analyzing fluoride based on the use of aluminum(III)- octaethylporphyrin and a lipophilic pH indicator (4',5'-dibromofluorescein octadecylester; ETH-7075) within a thin plasticized polymer film is described. This method involves casting the film on a 96-well plastic microtiter plate and analyzing with absorption spectroscopy. Even when the film is cast on a microtiterplate,it is shown to be very selective for fluoride overother commonanions,including perchlorate, nitrate, and sulfate. Measurements of fluoride in drinking water and fluoride in mouthrinse using this analysis technique are similar to values obtained from measuring the same samples with a classical lanthanum (III) fluoride electrode.
