Substituted acyclic and cyclic polyether cyclohexane ionophores can be "switched on and off" in their ability to complex with metal cations by their conformational changes. These changes in conformations of the molecule can be monitored by various nuclei such as H, C, and Na in NMR spectroscopy. Formation constants of the ionophore complex can calculated using the NMR spectral data.en_US
