Abstract
Researchers have investigated the interaction of fluids on porous media however those studies have largely been an investigation of significantly greater quantities of fluid or large scale fluid interactions with porous media. There has been little research done that probes the behavior of droplets on porous media at a micro - scale level. The purpose of this study was to examine the behavior of sessile micro - drops on porous media to be specifically applied to chemical warfare scenarios. The results from large scale fluid interaction studies cannot be applied to micro - scale scenarios. Micro - droplets of chemical agent simulates and porous media of varying relative porosities were used to directly observe relations or used to find properties necessary for furthering the Agent Fate Project. The relative porosities of silica gel, glazed tile, glass beads as well as gradients of sand, concrete and asphalt were found initially. Porosity was a factor in nearly all of the properties and observations. Chemical simulates including; ethylene glycol, methyl salicylate, diethyl malonate, and others were delivered to the porous media. Quantitative experiments using the simulates and porous media were used to determine properties such as; phase (relative) permeability, vapor diffusivity, reaction rate, and evaporation (mass loss).
