This paper describes the headspace gas study done at Kalsec Inc. to assess solvent losses through the exhaust stacks that service three of the company's extractors/processors. The study included the construction and use of a vacuum flask sampler for the collection of gases from the stacks. Gas chromatography was utilized to measure the amount of hexane and acetone present in these gases. The area counts obtained were compared to calibration curves constructed by measuring gas standards by GC in the lab. The data collected were used to calculate pounds of solvent lost per year using statistics from the previous year on the amount of time the extractors/processors were running.
